How to make wood furniture incombustible

Fireproofing of wooden furniture

This is a content that you may need to contact frequently. Can wooden furniture be made non-combustible, flame-retardant and fire-proof? That is the problem.

We have had several inquiries in the past, but when installing wooden furniture in the underground shopping center, fire fighting related fireproofing is required, but it is a consultation about whether it will not work.

It is difficult to answer because our company does not have clear knowledge about the Fire Service Law, but by painting soufa on wooden furniture, it is possible to make the furniture less burnable.
Although I look at the Fire Department’s material … it’s honest that I can’t understand it with my knowledge.

Basically, it is a recognition that flame protection and flame retardant treatment according to the Fire Service Law are applied to products that have undergone a specific test. This means that even if the object is treated on site, the object cannot be tested, so it cannot be said to be flameproof.
We also obtained flameproof certification, but this was only intended to be produced at the factory.
In addition to product testing, a survey is conducted on the manufacturing process, and certification is obtained for the entire product.

So, if you receive instructions on the site, “Please do flameproofing,” you may not know what to do. We will consult with such content.

In that case, we have negotiated with the fire department in charge with the fireproof certification materials acquired by our company and the experimental video data.
The installation of soufa has been confirmed to have a certain effect, and we have heard some cases where we have been given OK.
The following images are often presented.

Our fire protection certification has been obtained for cedar board disaster partitions.
A similar effect can be expected with solid wood.

The test footage is made by coating wood twice with a 16% aqueous soufa solution. There is a big difference in the combustion comparison with untreated wood.

At the same time, questions asked about the meaning and segregation of words such as non-combustible and flame retardant, flame and fire protection.
The terms non-combustible, semi-combustible, and flame-retardant are words applied to building materials under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and are linked to the Building Standards Law.
On the other hand, the word “flame prevention” is linked to the Fire Services Act and is related to artifacts, furniture, curtains, etc.

Also, to make it even harder to understand, in general (for example, plastics), the term flame-retardant is a measure of flame resistance.
Therefore, we use the term “flame retardant” in accordance with that standard, but when we talk to architects, it is often mistaken as a product with a lower level than “non-combustible”.

And although the words are similar, it is difficult to distinguish, but there is a considerable level difference between the incombustibility of non-combustible and flameproof.
It is difficult for even flame-retardant products to pass the lowest level of “flame retardant” testing of building materials. It is almost impossible to pass the noncombustible certification test. There is a performance difference as much. However, the meaning is confused because only those who specialize in those tasks can understand the difference.

To reiterate, when fire-related items point out the fire retardancy of wooden furniture, it often refers to the flameproofing performance.
Therefore, since the required level is not so high, if it is a wooden product, it will reach that level with soufa application.
However, certification is another matter because each product must be obtained.
